Tanabata, or the Star Festival, is a Japanese festival that celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair). According to legend, these two lovers are separated by the Milky Way and are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month.
Traditionally, people celebrate Tanabata by writing wishes on small pieces of paper called tanzaku and hanging them on bamboo branches along with other decorations. The festival is marked by various festivities, including parades, music, and the display of colorful streamers.
