Join us for an afternoon of talks celebrating all things automata.
‘The Magic of Automata’ by Michael & Maria Start
All of life is automated in this talk demonstrating rare antique automata from Lions that roar to birds that sing, there will even be a miniature mechanical Archer who shoots tiny arrows across the room and sticks out his tongue in delight.
Michael & Maria Start run The House of Automata, a museum and restoration workshop in Forres, Scotland.
‘Tick Tock Marvels and Gormenghast Castle’ by Henrietta Boex
This talk celebrates the genius of two men, the artist, poet and author Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) and the automata maker Keith Newstead (1956-2020) by demonstrating how Newstead’s Gormenghast Castle perfectly distils Peake’s densely descriptive Gormenghast trilogy into a convincing animated 3-D visual metaphor of the whole.
Henrietta Boex was the Director of Falmouth Art Gallery and is now a freelance Curator and a Director of Cabaret Mechanical Theatre Learning CIC.
Tickets are £18 or £16 for Tullie Friends and Patrons.
