About this Event

Join film scholar Jon Towlson for an illustrated history of cinema-going in Grantham, tracing the rise and fall of its cinemas and their role in community life. Drawing on research, photographs, and personal memories, this talk recreates the experience of going to the pictures and explores its lasting cultural impact.

Speaker Bio: A film critic for the British Film Institute (BFI), Jon has written numerous books on cinema including the memoir Window on the World (2024). He is a lecturer in film and media at the University of York.
