From Saville Row to the front room of a worker’s cottage, Curator Abi will explore the different ways that the men, women and young people of St John Ambulance sourced the uniform they wore with pride.
Today’s St John Ambulance volunteers are allocated their correct uniform through computerised systems, with items manufactured in closely managed supply chains and acquired from a single approved source. But how would the braided patrol jackets, leather leggings, washing dresses and Sister Dora caps of the late 19th and early 20th centuries have been acquired?
Fabric of Community: St John Ambulance Uniform and Volunteer Identity, a project supported by Art Fund to transform access to the Museum’s uniform collection, has revealed the great variety of ways a volunteer may have acquired their uniform, giving a glimpse into the lived experience of the people from all walks of life who chose to join St John Ambulance.
This is a free, relaxed event. Drop-ins are welcome, or you can pre-register through Eventbrite. The event will take place in the Museum Galleries which are on ground level with step-free access throughout.
