Get ready for an unforgettable live experience at the 4th Annual TAKOHACHI & Kotori Kai Shamisen Recital!
This year’s program features a dynamic blend of traditional and contemporary Japanese performing arts—from powerful taiko rhythms and expressive Tsugaru shamisen to dance, minyo singing, and even pop covers and original works.
We are thrilled to welcome our Special Guest, Nozomi Imade from Nozomi Music School, whose artistry in piano and voice brings a beautiful new dimension to the stage. Nozomi and our director, Yumi, also perform together as the duo Maido Mind, appearing monthly at the Portland Japanese Garden.
With a mix of seasoned performers and emerging students, this recital embodies our guiding philosophy of Onkochishin—honoring the old while creating the new. It showcases the full spectrum of Japanese music and movement, from classic traditions to modern interpretations. It’s a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in culture, connect with fellow music lovers, and support the artists who bring these stories to life.

1st Set – Traditional Foundations & Live Energy
Info: The first set brings together the vibrant core of Takohachi’s performing arts. You’ll experience the driving rhythms of taiko paired with the bright, lyrical voice of shinobue, followed by expressive Tsugaru shamisen pieces showcasing both power and nuance. The set also features Odori dances accompanied by live minyo singing, creating a rich blend of movement, melody, and tradition.

2nd Set – Contemporary Collaboration & New Creations
Info: The second set introduces a fresh, modern dimension to the recital with our Special Guest, Nozomi Imade. We begin with a featured performance by Maido Mind, the duo project of Nozomi and our director Yumi, known for their monthly appearances at the Portland Japanese Garden. From there, the collaboration expands into a series of creative, genre‑blending works that highlight piano, voice, shamisen, and ensemble interplay.
This set culminates in our grand finale, a contemporary piece titled “Tomodachi no Tori,” composed by shamisen legend Masahiro Nitta from Hokkaido, Japan. Our arrangement brings together a vibrant mix of instruments—including piano, clarinet, taiko set, shamisen, shinobue, cello, and more—creating a powerful, multi‑layered performance that celebrates innovation and friendship through music.
