Taking Flight Through History: A Book Talk with Nina Fresco
About this Event
Join us on Saturday, August 15, from 2:00–3:30 p.m. for a fascinating presentation by local historian and author Nina Fresco on her new book, First Around the World: The History of the Santa Monica Municipal Airport.
Long before it became one of the region's most debated landmarks, the Santa Monica Municipal Airport was at the center of the city's ambitions for growth and innovation. Established in 1921 using California's first public bond measure for airport acquisition, the airfield became home to Douglas Aircraft and played a pivotal role in aviation history. The airport served as the base for the first round-the-world flight and the first Women's Air Derby, helping transform Santa Monica into a hub of aerospace innovation and employment for generations.
Drawing on more than a decade of research into Santa Monica's past, Fresco will explore the airport's remarkable history and its lasting influence on the city. The talk will be followed by a book signing, with copies available for purchase in the museum shop.
Please RSVP to attend via Eventbrite. Admission to the event is included with museum entry, which is paid at the door. Please note: museum admission is $5 for adults, and free for students, seniors, SNAP/EBT cardholders, and active military. Donations are welcome to support more community programming like this at the Santa Monica History Museum.
