About this Event
Join us for a unique, hands-on experience in our one-day workshop, where you will be guided step-by-step through the entire process of creating your very own traditional swallow tail rake to take home. This workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn the age-old craft of rake-making, an essential skill that is now listed on the Heritage Craft Association’s list of endangered crafts. With only a small number of craftsmen still practicing this method in the traditional way, this workshop is your chance to preserve and celebrate this valuable piece of cultural heritage.
During the workshop, you will use sustainably sourced Ash wood for the body and tines of the rake. Ash is chosen for its durability and flexibility, making it ideal for crafting tools that can withstand heavy use. You will also use Hazel for the handle, which provides strength and a comfortable grip. Under the expert guidance of our skilled craftsman, you will learn how to select the right materials, shape the wood, and assemble the rake using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations.
No previous woodworking experience is necessary; all tools and materials will be provided. By the end of the day, you will leave with a beautifully crafted rake, made entirely by your own hands. You'll also gain a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and history behind this endangered skill. Don’t miss this chance to connect with the past, learn a new craft, and take home a unique, handmade tool!
