English Style Shave Horse Making Course

Join us for an enriching two-day course at our woodland workshop near Warminster, where you will have the opportunity to create your own rustic English-style shave horse, based on the classic design outlined in Mike Abbott's book, Working with Wood the Natural Way. This hands-on experience is perfect for anyone interested in traditional woodworking techniques and the satisfaction of crafting something by hand.

On the first day, you will learn to construct the body and legs of your shave horse using a range of traditional green woodworking tools, such as drawknives, spokeshaves, froes, and hand saws. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you will discover how to select, shape, and assemble your materials, gaining valuable skills in working with greenwood. You will also learn how to use hand tools effectively and safely, gaining a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship involved.

The second day will focus on turning the head and spindles of your shave horse using a pole lathe, a time-honored method for shaping wood. This unique technique will teach you the principles of woodturning, enhancing your understanding of both the materials and the tools. By the end of the day, you will have a fully functional shave horse, crafted by your own hands, ready to take home.

The course is open to participants aged 18 and above, with younger students allowed by prior arrangement. It runs from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm on both days with a half-hour break for lunch. Throughout the day, you can enjoy a selection of teas and coffees, as the kettle will be on for you to make a cuppa.
