Course Overview

This suturing and wound closure workshop provides a structured, clinically relevant approach to managing common wounds seen in primary and urgent care settings. The focus is on safe technique, correct selection of closure method, and practical skill development. Delegates practise foundational skills such as instrument handling, needle control, knot-tying, and simple interrupted sutures, with discussion of real-world wound scenarios. The workshop also includes guidance on when glue or staples may be appropriate.

Aim

To develop delegate confidence and practical capability in wound assessment and safe wound closure, including basic suturing technique, selection of appropriate closure methods, and aftercare and safety-netting within scope of practice.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Assess wounds safely and identify factors influencing closure choice, including contamination, depth, location, tension, and patient factors.
  2. Demonstrate core suturing skills, including safe instrument handling, knot-tying, and simple interrupted sutures on appropriate models.
  3. Select and apply suitable wound closure methods (sutures, tissue adhesive, staples) and recognise red flags requiring escalation, specialist input, or referral.
  4. Provide appropriate aftercare advice and documentation, including dressing choice, infection warning signs, follow-up, and safety-netting.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is suitable for clinicians who assess and manage wounds as part of their role, including:

  • Nurses and Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs)
  • Paramedics and Emergency Care Practitioners
  • Physician Associates
  • Pharmacists working in urgent care / minor illness & injury services
  • GP trainees and clinicians undertaking minor injuries work

If you are new to suturing, this session provides a supportive introduction. If you already suture, it works well as a skills refresh and update on closure selection, aftercare, and safe technique.

What We Cover
  • Wound assessment: haemostasis, depth, contamination and infection risk
  • Choosing a closure method: sutures vs glue vs staples (indications and limitations)
  • Safe set-up and technique: aseptic approach, instrument handling, needle control
  • Core skills practice: knot-tying and simple interrupted sutures (time permitting, common variations)
  • Tissue adhesive (glue): safe application, common pitfalls, aftercare
  • Staples: when to use, basic technique overview, removal considerations
  • Dressings, aftercare and safety-netting: infection signs, wound dehiscence, follow-up

Important Competency Statement

This workshop teaches application principles and supports skills development. It does not confer clinical competency on its own. Delegates should work within local policy and scope of practice, and complete a period of supervised practice with a suitable clinical mentor to support competency sign-off where required.

Recommended Pre-Reading:
  • NICE Guidance on Wound Management in Primary Care
  • BMJ Best Practice: Minor wounds
  • RCEM Learning: Suturing techniques and wound closure
  • Geeky Medics: Suturing Techniques Guide

Is this suturing workshop suitable for beginners?

Yes. The workshop starts with fundamentals (instrument handling, knot-tying, simple sutures) and provides guided practice. It is also useful as a refresher for clinicians who already suture.

Does the workshop include glue and staples?

Yes. The session includes guidance on selecting and using tissue adhesive (glue) and staples, including limitations, aftercare, and when to escalate.

Will I be signed off as competent after this workshop?

No. You will receive a certificate of attendance, but competency requires supervised clinical practice and local sign-off in line with employer policy.

Do you deliver on-site training?

Yes. We can deliver the workshop for organis
