Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Services

Howard Wertheimer joined the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as interim associate vice chancellor for Facilities Services, effective July 7, 2025.
Wertheimer has nearly 40 years of leadership experience in facilities planning, design, construction and operations in both higher education and nonprofit settings.
From 2006 to 2019, Wertheimer served as the assistant vice president for Capital Planning and Space Management and Institute Architect at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In this role, he provided strategic oversight of the campus master plan, led sustainable campus development efforts, and guided the university’s $1.5 billion capital improvement plan.
Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Wertheimer spent 21 years at Lord, Aeck & Sargent where he was a partner and principal focused on college and university capital projects.
Most recently, Wertheimer has held interim and consulting roles at the University of South Carolina, Vanderbilt University and Kennesaw State University, and he is a lecturer at the School of Architecture at Georgia Tech.
Wertheimer holds both a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Master of Architecture from Georgia Tech. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) and a LEED Accredited Professional. A sought-after speaker, consultant and advisor, Wertheimer brings a deep knowledge of higher education facilities and proven experience with leading cross-functional teams, complex projects and strategic planning initiatives.
His interim leadership, which will be for a one-year term, will help ensure continuity and momentum for Facilities Services while a search is conducted for a permanent associate vice chancellor.
