About this Event

Come along to hear more about how Sussex IFCA develop and monitor fisheries management, including a review of the democratic and stakeholder inclusive decision-making process, and case studies from management currently in effect.

Small-scale inshore fishing is a socially and culturally important practice in Sussex, supporting local communities as part of their identity. Unfortunately it is also under threat from mounting economic, political, and social pressures. A healthy, diverse environment is also critical but this industry faces mounting pressures from climate change, pollution and marine renewables, and finding solutions that benefit inshore fisheries while addressing the biodiversity crisis is a thin line to tread.

This talk will communicate how Sussex IFCA attempts to balance two contrasting requirements; to promote sustainable fishing and a healthy marine environment, whilst also facilitating the socioeconomic benefit of locally important fishing practices.

Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities lead, champion and manage a sustainable marine environment and inshore fisheries, by successfully securing the right balance between social, environmental and economic benefits to ensure healthy seas, sustainable fisheries and viable industry.

Meet your speaker

Dr George Balchin, Conservation and Research Manager, Sussex IFCA

Together with a small, but bright and enthusiastic team, George is responsible for the research and monitoring that informs the development and review of all Sussex IFCA's fisheries byelaws; this includes collecting, collating, and synthesising both anecdotal evidence from stakeholders, as well as empirical data on habitats and fish stocks. His background is as an academic, using citizen science data to monitor long-term and seasonal trends in shark populations.
