A Fictional Club, A Real History
Wearable Public Art as Cultural Narrative
Lawrence United F.C. reimagines the history of Lawrence, Kansas through the structure of a soccer club, assembling a team of historical figures into a selective and symbolic roster. At its core is the crest, a stable emblem of identity that carries the continuity of both club and city. Inspired in part by the speculative logic of J. G. Ballard’s short stories and Monty Python’s ‘The Philosophers’ Football Match’ (1972), the project blends history with imagination—treating Lawrence as a team and transforming people into players and events into symbols. Realized through wearable objects like jerseys and scarves, it brings these narratives into everyday life. Drawing on a broader culture of remixing across art and design, Lawrence United F.C. functions as a conceptual collage: layered, playful, and open-ended, offering a new way to engage with the past through the familiar language of sport.
