About our course

Our Beginners 6 week Mug Making Throwing Course is a perfect introduction to pottery. We'll guide you step by step to making your unique mugs.

Join us for a skill-packed and relaxed 6-week workshop designed to take you through the essential techniques to make your own wheel thrown pottery mugs.

No experience is necessary. You don't need to be artistic, but it's fine if you are!.

All materials and firing is included in the price.

What You’ll Learn:

Clay preparation & centering

Opening up & getting height

Knuckling up

Linear pulled handles

Slip decoration techniques

Reactive Glaze decoration (additional fee)

Course Goal:

By the end of the course you’ll have learned the basics of throwing, pulling handles and decoration or glazing to make mugs.

The course includes the firing of 4 mugs. Additional mugs can be fired at a cost of £5 per mug.

What’s Included:

Unlimited clay and decorative slips

Expert tuition & live demonstrations

Glazing and firing of 4 mugs

2 hours of weekly studio time (please allow ~20 minutes for clean-up)

What's the difference between a slip finish and reactive glaze finish?

Slip decoration involves the application of coloured clay to your mugs (like the fish mugs in the gallery photos). We will then transparent glaze them.

Reactive glaze involves adding a ready made coloured glaze to your mugs (like the olive green mugs in the gallery photos).

If you are not sure which decoration you would like to do we suggest that you purchase the Slip course and you can decide later if you would like to glaze.
