An evening of authentic storytelling and country-folk songs, best served fireside under a starry night. Stretching from the humid tropical north, across the red desert sands of Mparntwe NT, to the rocky outrops of Uralla, this summer house concert will be a heart-felt and intimate look into regional narrative songwriting. Local Uralla-based singer-songwriter Jhana Allan is joined by two of her dear NT-based friends, Emmy Ryan (Mparntwe/Alice Springs), and Alice Cotton (Gulumoerrgin/Darwin) off the back of their performances at Tamworth Country Music Festival.
Alice Cotton
Straight outta Darwin, queer indie-folk artist Alice Cotton’s infectious songs ‘hit you with the depth and breadth of her storytelling’ (triple j). Fresh off a top 10 placement in NT’s Territory Sounds Countdown and a finalist placement for the inaugural Australian Folk Music Awards, Cotton is carving up the country’s regional music scene with her infectious and off-kilter blend of folk, alt-country and indie-rock. Audiences are drawn in by Alice’s playful banter paired with stunning vocals and introspective lyrics about family dogs, queer love, and a constant longing for food.
Emmy Ryan
The finest folk music explores the personal and the political and Mparntwe Alice Springs-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Emmy Ryan excels at exploring and detailing the complex terrain of both of those aspects of the genre.
Born and raised on Bundjalung and Wiradjuri Country in regional NSW, of Irish and Scottish heritage, Emmy is now based on Arrernte Country in the NT.
In September 2024 Emmy released her debut EP I Ain’t So Blue, a consummate collection of songs shaped by the skies, seas, cities, mountains, plains, and deserts of her homes. The EP has received acclaim and airplay from community and commercial radio around the country. It was the feature album on 8CCC Radio in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek in its release week, and has been featured on ABC Radio. Emmy has performed at Dorrigo Folk & Bluegrass Festival, Desert Song Festival, St Albans Folk Festival, the Australian Celtic Festival, and the Top Half Folk Festival.
Jhana Allan
Born in Hobart, Tasmania and now making her home in Uralla, northern NSW, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jhana Allan has had a long road to finding her voice as a musician. On her newest sophomore studio release, “Fake Paradise”, she explores a cyclical emotional addiction that has plagued her throughout her entire adult life.
Drawing on inspiration from musicians such as The Weather Station, Sam Amidon, PJ Harvey, and Lucy Thorne, the album moves through folk, jazz, and rock soundscapes, retaining a throughline of Allan’s visceral and emotive writing and singing, and grounded by her layered vocal presence.
