About this Event

Baltimore has its very own kids’ playmat, and we’re going to celebrate! Join us at Summer Fridays at The Shops at Kenilworth, where we'll gather in the mall's atrium (by the fountain!) for a Baltimore-themed storyimte with author Nancy Patz.

Nancy Patz will read from her adorable picture books, each of which contains a glimpse of Baltimore life. See if you can spot them!

Then, chat with the Baltimore-based creator of Matropolis™ Baltimore, Julien Polillo, about the new playmats– each of which is full of Baltimore landmarks like Camden Yards, the Aquarium, Patterson Park, and more.

Mats will be available for purchase at the event.

Baltimore’s First Puzzle Play Mat. Matropolis™ Baltimore is a non-toxic, 0.47” thick EVA foam floor covering featuring 24 interlocking tiles. This STEM Powerhouse design includes over 20 local landmarks and cultural references in high-contrast colors. These BPA-free, hypoallergenic tiles cover 24 sq. ft. and can be configured flat or as 3D cubes.

Nancy Patz has written and illustrated popular picture books, including Pumpernickel Tickle and Mean Green Cheese, Moses Supposes His Toeses are Roses, and Babies Can’t Eat Kimchee! (with Susan L. Roth.) The latest is There’s a Dragon in the Treehouse and He Won’t Come Down!

Who Was the Woman Who Wore the Hat? won the Sydney Taylor Award of The Association of Jewish Libraries and the Selectors’ Choice Award of the Children’s Book Council and The Council for the Social Studies.

Gina Farina and the Prince of Mintz was made into a musical, by Charles Kondeck and Steve Liebman in 2002 and produced by the New York State Theater Institute.

Born in Baltimore, Patz attended public schools and Goucher College, graduating from Stanford University. Her illustrations, paintings, drawings, and prints have been regularly exhibited in museums and galleries. She lectures widely in schools and teachers’ groups on the art of the picture book.
