Summer Bookworms

This is a book club with a difference!

Reading with an adult can help to build a foundational love of reading for children and young people. It can provide a safe space to explore tricky feelings and concepts, and strengthen the bond between adult & child. Discussion around the reading helps to further these benefits by modeling how to process the story.

Before the session, read the book with your child. I'd recommend to read in short regular chunks, maybe before bedtime, on the bus, or any time that can become a bit of a routine. Talk about it as you go.

During the session, we will have some snacks and a little chat about the book. There are no wrong answers, and all opinions are welcome. It will be a relatively small group to try and encouage the litte ones to share their opinions. After the discussion we will do some themed crafts.

All abilities are welcome - audiobooks are a really great way to access stories for adults who aren't very confident readers, although I'd recommend to have a book to look at at the same time, the pictures can really help to encourage little imaginations!

There will be 2 sessions at The Big Local over the summer (however, if there is a lot of interest, I'd be happy to schedule some extra dates in):

Thursday August 20th - The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
