Suminagashi Art Workshop - Finding calmness & joy in the flow of ink
About this Event
What is Suminagashi?
Suminagashi (墨流し), which translates to "floating ink," is considered the world’s oldest marbling technique. This artisanal craft originated in China around 2,000 years ago and was later embraced and perfected in Japan during the 12th century. During the Heian period, it became a highly valued traditional craft used to decorate Washi paper, kimonos, and fine silk items with mesmerising patterns.
Today, Suminagashi is being rediscovered by artists worldwide. It blends ancient artistic techniques with the quiet joy of engaging in a process that is partly guided by chance – always bringing a spontaneous surprise with it.
Why try a Suminagashi workshop?
We all need moments of quietness – Suminagashi is an open-ended art form and an experience for all five senses.
In a fast-paced world, where we often find ourselves surrounded by perfectionism and regularly reaching our mental limits, it is incredibly refreshing to step back into the role of an observer and shift into a state of calm mindfulness.
Suminagashi offers a meditative time-out. It invites you to pause and admire what is unfolding right in front of your eyes in the water basin.
The truly relaxing part is that you can't control where the ink ultimately goes anyway – which is exactly why you can simply let go and immerse yourself in watching the graceful ink on the water's surface.
Hailey's Suminagashi Art Experience Workshop in Hamburg
In this guided Suminagashi workshop, you will explore the beautiful art of floating ink, creating unique organic patterns and fluid forms that can be transferred onto rice paper to take home. Beyond learning the technique, this is a space to embrace spontaneity, discover unexpected beauty, and be fully in the present moment.
Hailey will also share insights on how to bring the core philosophy of Suminagashi into your daily life as inspiration. Practising mindfulness and shifting your mindset from a "controller" to an "observer" can truly make life feel a little lighter.
