Tentative Suicide Prevention schedule:
12:30 pm lunch in Vesper Hall (downstairs).
1 pm music by Young Native Fiddlers and Dancing with the Spirit musicians
1:30-4 pm Suicide Prevention Workshop featuring Be the Difference film; steps to take to prevent suicide; prevention research; discussion and individual action plans.
Featured Presenter: Larry Shallert, our Suicide Prevention Resource Person who was awarded "Social Worker of the Year for California" a few years ago. His specialty is suicide prevention and they have had great sucess in his community in reducing the numbaer of suicides for ages 25 years and under from 11 sucides per year to 1 or 0 per year. Larry and his sister Mary (a psychiatric nurse by training) have traveled to three TCC villages over the past two years teaching music and dancing for Dancing with the Spirit, an organization that has been traveling to village schools here in Alaska for 20 years. In the past two years, we've led 52 School Music and Culture Weeks with primarily Native musicians and storytellers. Our goal is to prevent suicide and drug/alcohol abuse.
The attached video Be the Difference does interview two people who lost family members to suicide--so should be sent out cautiously where people have others to rely on after watching... The video goes through suicide prevention steps. It's also important to remind people of the new Crisis line which is 988.
