Boost your suicide assessment and management skills in this free online and interactive APA certified CE course. Through this asynchronous self-paced course, attendees will learn state-of-science theoretical, measurement, and applied research as practical approaches to assist clinicians in accounting for culture and diversity in their suicide prevention and management.
SP201 is a culture and diversity-infused workshop for clinicians, school counselors, crisis response staff, and other providers. The workshop will provide instruction and a forum for clinical discussion and case practice, on the current standards for suicide prevention and management. A useable framework and accessible guidelines will ensure that participants are able to competently manage suicide risk, incorporating the latest standards in suicide science and practice. Participants will learn to account for cultural influences on suicide risk and infuse key evidence-based cultural considerations throughout their suicide management activities. Aims are to provide guidance to advance culturally responsive suicide practice. Upon completion a certificate for 6 APA approved CEs will be provided

- As of January 2025, you can access our General self-paced course which will train you to work with clients across a variety of ages
- In March 2025, a Youth-focused self-paced version of the course will be available as well, focusing specifically on suicide assessment/management of youth clients.
Learning Objectives
This workshop is designed to help you:
1) Identify six key steps of assessing and managing suicide risk
2) Apply standard approaches to suicide risk assessment and inquiry, incorporating current level of risk and standard suicide risk and protective factors
3) Identify major components of safety planning, suicide risk case conceptualization, and treatment planning while accounting for important clinical documentation and legal considerations.
4) Discuss the latest research on cultural differences in suicide, and culturally competent assessment and prevention of suicide among ethnic minority and LGBTQ populations.
5) Understand cultural factors and implicit bias that impact assessment and management of suicide risk and crisis intervention.
6) Apply a guiding framework and assessment tools/approaches that will advance culturally responsive suicide practice with diverse populations and mitigate implicit bias.
