About this Event

Last Minute Productions / Studio Redfern Community Centre present:
6-week Intermediate DJ course
facilitated by Nick Toth (free)

Building on the foundations of our Beginner Course, this program elevates students' DJ skills, musical understanding, and business knowledge to a professional level.
Smaller class sizes ensure more 1-on-1 time with the instructor, culminating in a live graduation performance
Note: You must be a StudioRCC Beginner DJ Course graduate to enrol in this course!
You must also have a DJ controller from Week 1 and we recommend to have SeratoDJ Pro installed.

Week 1 - Foundations
ntroduction – course overview – learning outcomes •
Establishment of previous learning / skill levels – dreams & aspirations •
Revision of Serato DJ basics – intro to advanced features and/or DJ Pro •
Revision of Pioneer controller basics – intro to advanced techniques including stems •
Explore different mixing techniques based on genres and personal style •
Practice time / Q&A Homework: Apply new techniques to your current transitions and mixes.

Week 2 – Vinyl DJing
Revision of key points from Week 1 / Q&A •
Technics SL-1200 turntables – main features – cartridge & stylus – set-up •
Pioneer DJM-700 – main features – set-up – troubleshooting •
Manual cueing – hand technique & record handling – visual markers •
Counting BPM – tempo matching basics – develop active listening skills •
Putting it together – basic beat-mixing – demonstration & practice •
Q&A Homework: Start planning your 30-minute graduation set.

Week 3 – Pro Controller
Revision of key points from Week 2 / Q&A •
Pioneer XDJ-RX3 – set-up – input & output options – signal flow •
Music management – intro to Rekordbox – track analysis, cue points, playlists, USB export • Browsing/loading tracks, waveform info, touchscreen selection, and deck controls •
Demonstrate a basic transition – student practice time •
Q&A Homework: Decide which gear you want to use at graduation & continue working on your set.

Week 4 – Business, Brand & Marketing Essentials
Revision of key points from Week 3 / Q&A •
Business structures (sole trader vs company) + ABN/business name set-up •
Licenses, insurance, copyright/trademark basics •
Invoicing, bookkeeping & business planning (SMART) •
Define your brand: WHY, strengths, niche, audience, identity, authenticity •
Social media – FB, IG, TT, YT, SoundCloud, etc. – engagement, consistency, voice, purpose • Marketing: know your UVP, niche, customer, competition, and the importance of networking •
Q&A Homework: Prepare your brand presentation (bio, press pics, logo, socials, overall tone, etc.).

Week 5 – Brand & Set Review
Revision of key points from Week 4 / Q&A •
Present your DJ brand to the class • Present a short sample of your graduation DJ set •
1-on-1 review of your branded DJ set •
Reading the room – energy management & basic mic use •
Practice time Homework: Perfect your set and record/film yourself – useful both for self-review and as promo content for your socials.

Week 6 – Graduation Event
Graduation performances – each student performs their DJ set live •
Guests, friends & family welcome to attend, it’s a celebration! •
Certificate presentation & Group photos.
