Now that the rains have freshened Chiang Mai’s skies, we’re thrilled to bring our next Frontier Fridays: Chiang Mai event back to Greenhouse, and this one promises to be both powerful and deeply moving.
On Friday, October 24, from 5–8pm, we’ll be hosting the opening of “Struggles and Resilience of Myanmar”, a photo exhibition that shines a light on the immense challenges and enduring hope within Myanmar today.
Myanmar’s people and landscape face extraordinary pressures — from the war since the 2021 military coup to the scars of rare earth mining in Kachin State and devastating floods and earthquakes. Conflict and economic hardship have displaced millions, pushing many young people to flee their homes. Yet, amid all this turmoil, stories of courage, creativity and quiet resilience continue to emerge.
This exhibition will bring together two remarkable photo essays:
Paradise lost – A haunting portrait of the Kachin landscape and traditional communities being sacrificed to the global clean energy transition.
No country for young men – A moving chronicle of life in exile, capturing the struggle and resilience of a generation displaced by conflict, conscription and economic collapse.
These works come from two people of different generations — one a seasoned photojournalist from Kachin; the other a young, emerging photographer from Ye Township, in Mon State, who is now based in the Thai border town of Mae Sot. Put together, their stories create a dialogue across generations and geographies, reminding us of what endures even in the hardest of times.
Our launch evening will also coincide with the Myanmar Thadingyut light festival, and will be accompanied by traditional food and drinks available from our Myanmar teashop next door Gatone’s and several other favourite Burmese restaurants. The exhibition will continue over the weekend, October 25–26, from 9am to 5pm.
Dress Code: Nature, youth and resilience 🌿 (Inspired by Myanmar)
As part of this event, we’ve also launched an online Photo Essay Competition, where Frontier members and our social media audiences can vote for their favourite works. The winning photo essays will be featured at the exhibition.
Through this gathering, we hope to spark meaningful conversations — not only about the crises facing Myanmar, but also about the human spirit and community bonds that persist against all odds.
Please RSVP to [email protected] before Wednesday, October 22.
