Streets, Settlements, and Suds: A Three-Part History of the Twin Cities
Experience the people, places, and ideas that left a lasting imprint on our Twin Cities landscape.
Join us for an engaging three-part Twin Cities history lecture series exploring iconic streets, historic neighborhoods, and the architectural legacy of brewing in St. Paul and Minneapolis. Presented by Kristin Anderson, Professor Emerita of Art & Design at Augsburg University, this fully illustrated series brings local history to life through storytelling, imagery, and architectural insight.
Each session stands alone, but together they tell a broader story of how community, culture, and commerce shaped the Twin Cities we know today.
Lecture Schedule
》Part 1: St. Paul’s Summit Avenue
Thursday, January 22 | 2:00 PM
Everyone in the Twin Cities knows Summit Avenue—its grand mansions, historic colleges, and the iconic Cathedral of St. Paul. But beneath its beauty lies a deeper story. This illustrated presentation explores Summit Avenue’s development, its architectural significance, and its role as one of Minnesota’s most treasured streets.
Part 2: St. Paul’s Historic Irvine Park
》Thursday, February 26 | 2:00 PM
Just steps from downtown and West Seventh Street, Irvine Park is one of St. Paul’s oldest neighborhoods. Built around a charming public park and surrounded by historic homes, this area tells a powerful story of early settlement, urban change, and historic preservation in the Twin Cities.
Part 3: Building for Beer in the Twin Cities
》Thursday, March 26 | 2:00 PM
From 19th-century breweries and biergartens to today’s craft beer renaissance, brewing has left a visible mark on the Twin Cities landscape. This presentation explores the architecture, neighborhoods, and cultural spaces shaped by the brewing industry from its earliest roots to the present day.
