About this Event
This intensive workshop is rarely offered to novelists but teaches you the
principles of story design, focusing on narrative form rather than formula.
This is a course for those who have begun or completed a novel/novella,
writers who are stuck, or starters with a strong idea for a fiction project.
We begin by examining narrative structure, act configuration and character
arcs. You will learn about plotting out your narrative; point of view; the
hook and elevator pitch; intensifying or releasing conflict using pacing,
peaks, and valleys (dialogue/action, description/reflection); how to deal
with the giant soufflé in the middle of your novel; adding weight through
theme using place, language, and style; subplot structure; and
action to page count analysis.
Finally, tips and tricks for remaining motivated, creating time for writing,
and approaching agents. Includes pre-course work, exercises during the
week, and workshopping sections of your own writing (structural or
character elements) with your colleagues.
Two days are allocated to catch-up: 9th February and 2nd March, with 9th March devoted either to co-writing, time off, or catch-up.
