Story Quilts: Inspired by Faith Ringgold and the Quilters of Gee’s Bend

The Gee's Bend lesson focuses on how fabric in the United States made an impact during the times of slavery and has been passed down from generations of descendants of slaves. Participants will be able to create art inspired by traditional quilting patterns or create their own story quilt inspired by Faith Ringgold’s book tar beach.

Audience/population who can participate in the workshops:

Open to ALL AGES. Younger participants may need adult assistance and supervision.

Facilitator bio:
3rd generation Oakland native Rachel-Anne Palacios is an Afro-Chicana mother, multi-cultural arts educator, and self-taught folk artist with over 20 years of community experience. Her work—deeply rooted in respect for culture, spirituality, elders, and the cycle of life and death—serves as a bridge between traditional legacies and modern education.
A former lead educator for the Oakland Museum of California, Rachel-Anne has spent over 20 years leading workshops across Bay Area schools and libraries. Currently the Multicultural Arts Instructor at Oakland’s Fred Korematsu Elementary school, she specializes in integrating indigenous global traditions into core curriculum standards. Her mission is to help students of all ages find their creative voice, bringing joy and cultural representation into the classroom.
