Facilitator: Tyler Foley, Author The Power to Speak Naked

Session Purpose

This workshop equips safety professionals with practical storytelling and speaking tools to strengthen influence, communicate risk more effectively, and lead with confidence in meetings, training, investigations, and toolbox talks. Participants learn why stories drive behaviour more effectively than data alone and how to transform real safety experiences into clear, compelling messages.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Understand how storytelling influences attention, memory, and behaviour in safety contexts.
  • Identify and shape real workplace moments into effective safety stories.
  • Develop one complete, ready‑to‑use safety story linked to a clear message and call to action.
  • Build and deliver a concise 3–5 minute safety talk.
  • Practice giving and receiving structured, constructive feedback.
  • Leave with a personal action plan for integrating storytelling into daily safety leadership.

Agenda Overview (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

Welcome and Framing – Setting expectations, psychological safety, and the role of voice and leadership in safety.

Why Storytelling Works in Safety – How stories outperform statistics, examples from safety practice, and discussion of real‑world speaking moments.

Story Discovery: Mining Your Moments – Guided exercises to identify incidents, near misses, turning points, and lessons that can become safety stories.

Crafting Your Signature Safety Story – Simple safety story structure (Context–Incident–Insight–Action), message clarity, and authentic delivery.

Speaking Practice and Feedback – Developing a 3–5 minute talk, peer practice, and structured feedback using a repeatable model.

Integration and Action Planning – Identifying where and how to use stories in the next 30–60 days and setting accountability commitments.

Instructional Approach

The session blends short teaching segments with individual reflection, paired and small‑group work, live practice, and coached feedback. Emphasis is placed on practical application, psychological safety, and immediate transfer back to the workplace.

Participant Takeaways

Participants leave with a polished safety story, a reusable story‑development framework, a 3–5 minute talk outline, feedback tools, and a clear plan for applying storytelling in their safety role.
