歡迎來參與台灣短篇小説讀書會的第十二次聚會！我們是以雙語（英文和中文）來討論短篇故事的文學愛好者，大約每兩個月在臺北聚會一次。在活動當中，我們將分成英文和中文的討論小組，透過討論問題進行深入閱讀和詮釋。在這個分享和積極聆聽的空間中，我們希望參與者能夠通過討論的過程而獲得新的視角，同時也能發展批判性閱讀和論述能力。我們選擇的文本也會讓讀者更加瞭解與台灣身份相關的文學、歷史、政治、和審美主題。
Come join the twelfth meeting of the Short Story Club! We are a Chinese-English bilingual short story discussion group that meets in Taipei about once every 2 months. During the meeting, we will divide into smaller, language-specific groups to close-read and interpret the text with the support of a series of discussion questions. In this space of sharing and active listening, we hope participants will gain new perspectives from one another while developing as critical readers in conversation. Through our readings, we will also learn about the complex literary, historical, political, and aesthetic themes related to Taiwanese identity.

1938. Novelist Aoyama Chizuko has sailed from her home in Nagasaki and arrived in Taiwan. She’s been invited there by the Japanese government ruling the island, though she has no interest in their imperialist agenda. Instead, Chizuko longs to experience real island life and to taste as much of its authentic cuisine as her famously monstrous appetite can bear. Soon a Taiwanese woman is hired as her interpreter and makes her dreams come true. The charming, erudite Chizuru arranges Chizuko’s travels and also proves to be an exceptional cook.
Over scenic train rides and braised pork rice, lively banter, and winter melon tea, Chizuko grows infatuated with her companion and intent on drawing her closer. But something causes Chizuru to keep her distance.
Disguised as a translation of a rediscovered Japanese, Taiwan Travelogue (first published 2020) and its translations have won the highest literary honors in Taiwan, Japan, and the United States. The novel unearths lost colonial histories and reveals how power dynamics inflect our most intimate relationships.

昭和十三年，青山千鶴子的半自傳小說《青春記》改編為電影在臺上映，在婦人團體日新會推廣之下反應熱烈，受邀來臺巡迴演講。青山千鶴子出身富紳家族，因母親早逝送往長崎分家養育，旅居臺中時，日新會推薦一位臺灣大家族庶出的女子王千鶴擔任通譯。在全然不同文化教養下長大的兩人，因而有機會一起遊歷縱貫鐵道沿線城市。她們曾經留宿臺北鐵道飯店、臺南鐵道飯店，甚或延伸搭乘糖鐵、地方支線，飽覽各城鎮風光。每至一處，街道攤販、駄菓子舖、𥴊仔店、喫茶店，或者洋食店、餐廳、旅館，走到哪裡吃到哪裡。這一趟縱貫鐵道美食之旅，實屬難得，是兩位女子相遇於婚姻之前，以自由凝佇的時光片刻。在味蕾滿足之餘，彼此交流了文化與思想，青山千鶴子才知道，曾任公學校教師的王千鶴，有著當翻譯家的願望。或許是身為女子的共鳴，青山千鶴子理解女性要擁有獨立的職涯極為不易，何況王千鶴並沒有雄厚的背景與家人的支持，便心生助其一臂之力的念頭。然而，戰爭的嚴峻日漸逼來……兩人是否能如願走向自己希冀的命運？

Born in Taichung in 1984, Yáng Shuāng-zǐ is a novelist and researcher of genre fiction and youth subcultures. Her other novels include Seasons Of Bloom and No. 1, Siwei Street. The pen name Shuang-Zi is taken from the Japanese kanji for “twins”. Originally sharing this pen name with her twin sister, she has continued using it since her sister’s passing in 2015. Her novels focus on female relationships and often incorporate elements of Taichung’s history under Japanese colonial rule.
楊双子，本名楊若慈，一九八四年生，臺中烏日人，雙胞胎中的姊姊。百合／歷史／大眾小說家，動漫畫次文化與大眾文學觀察者。著有小說《四維街一號》、《臺灣漫遊錄》、《花開少女華麗島》、《花開時節》，散文《開動了！老臺中：歷史小說家的街頭飲食踏查》、《我家住在張日興隔壁》，以及漫畫原作《綺譚花物語》等書。曾獲金鼎獎、金漫獎、Openbook年度華文創作等，《臺灣漫遊錄》的日譯、英譯分別由日本中央公論新社與美國 Graywolf Press 出版，日譯本獲日本翻譯大賞，英譯本於 2024 年獲美國國家圖書獎翻譯文學獎。「双子」取自日文漢字，意指雙胞胎姊妹，在雙胞胎妹妹過世之後正式使用的這個筆名，是雙胞胎姊妹共同創作的象徵。

Lin King 金翎 is a writer and translator based in Taipei and New York. Her translations from Mandarin and Japanese into English include the graphic novel series The Boy from Clearwater by Yu Pei-Yun and Zhou Jian-Xin (Levine Querido), the chapbook Cloud Labour by Sabrina Huang (Strangers Press), and the novel Taiwan Travelogue by Yáng Shuāng-zǐ (Graywolf Press), which won the 2024 National Book Award in Translated Literature.
金翎畢業於普林斯頓大學學士和哥倫比亞大學碩士，並在後者任教寫作兩年。身為以英文創作的作者，曾在文藝雜誌《One Story》、《Boston Review》等發表多篇小說和散文，並曾獲得美國筆會PEN America短篇小說新人獎。於 2018 年開始登出中、日、英的翻譯作品，並自 2023年陸續推出游珮芸和周見信以白色恐怖為主題的漫畫系列《來自清水的孩子》、楊双子日治時期歷史小說《臺灣漫遊錄》的英文版，後者獲得2024美國國家圖書獎National Book Awards。
