🖊️ About the Text
Spent Bullets is a collection of linked stories that spans Taipei and Silicon Valley, tracing the short life and long shadow of an engineering genius who descends deeper into despair while rising higher on the professional ladder. The characters in Spent Bullets are the golden children of Taiwan’s elite schools and America’s tech empires, conditioned to believe their worth is measured by suffering and success. At the center is Jie-Heng, a prodigy who can solve any logic problem—but not the problem of human relations. A young man with no center to ground him, he tries to fit in, yet fails to connect because of other people’s fear, misunderstanding, resentment, and obsessive adoration.
Jie-Heng’s most vital attachment is a perverse relationship with Wu Yi-Hsiang, a tormentor turned lover who offers a thin tether to reality. Wu Yi-Hsiang, fascinated by Jie-Heng’s intellect and anxious to please, becomes the keeper of Jie-Heng’s desire for debasement. When Jie-Heng’s yearning to embrace the void is realized, he leaves behind a host of unanswered questions, complicated feelings, and peers who carry his memory like a bullet in a glass case.
