Make a beautiful wooden stool by hand!
Using traditional tools and techniques you will learn the age-old craft of stool making in a 2 day course in a beautiful natural environment.
Ben and Tom Jennings will run a two day stool making course in Foundry Wood, in and around Outdoor Classroom.
Timings: 9:30am – 5:30pm both days
Dates: Saturday 12th AND Sunday 13 Sept
Cost: £125 pp

All tools, wood and finishing provided. We will be using locally felled Ash legs and re-purposed antique Elm seats. No previous experience required but know the process involves some hard (but fun!) work.
Further details: The course will be available to the public (age 18+) for a £125, and will be available to a maximum of 10 people. The group will be taught the basic skills and health and safety of green wood working, which involves using planes, chisels, spoke shaves and drawknives. These tools are good for beginners because they are quite safe and simple to maintain good safe working practices.
Participants will arrive at 9.30, break for lunch at 12.30 and the day will finish at 5pm/5.30.
We will be using a combination of shave horses and work benches.
Course Objectives:
– To introduce local people to green woodworking methods, using locally sourced wood. It’s an immediate connection to their local natural environment, and a way of relating to it which is productive and therapeutic.
– To learn the mindful activity of wood carving which has been shown to have positive effects on people’s sense of well-being, physical strength, and confidence. The group will be taught in a relaxed and fun way, and the participants will likely bond with one another while collaborating over the weekend.
– To have each participant to be learn with a new set of traditional wood working skills (which are always in danger of being lost with the proliferation of machine tools and computer design), a new understanding of a traditional craft, positive memories of local events, some new friends, and of course a beautiful hand made stool which should last for decades.
