About this Event
Welcome to Stitch 'n Bitch x RCM! Join us for an afternoon of crafting and chatting on Sun, June 30th, 2024 at 2:00 PM at our new FFF Shop at 81 Stoke Newington Road. Typically, attendees knit, though others crochet (they are called 'Happy Hookers'), and still others engage in cross-stitching, embroidery, and other needlecraft. Bring your latest project or start something new with the guidance of Roberta. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a complete beginner, all are welcome! Let's stitch, bitch, and have a great time together. See you there!
💟 Bring in a creative project you're already working on or try something new! We have everything you need to try hand sewing, crochet, knitting, upcycling, jewellery making and more !
🌐 Work on your project in a social setting. Make friends, expand your network of creatives, and practice / learn new skills.
♻️ Get advice from Roberta of @upcycledbyrcmargot if you have any creative blocks. Beginners are very welcome, we have materials for purchase and everything you need to make your project idea a reality!
RCM was established by Roberta Ciardo in 2019. Roberta is an emerging artists, fashion designer and stylist, who is an enthusiast for minimising the negative impacts of the fashion industry. She aims to reduce the need for fast fashion through the recycling and deconstruction of material into repurposed garments. She first found her passion by upcycling unwanted products as a hobby in 2011, eight years later she turned this into her own. With an underlying desire to venture into sustainable fashion post-pandemic, she collaborated with a collective of creatives who enhanced her inspiration for painting on clothing and deconstruction.
Stitch 'n Bitch is a name that has been used to refer to social knitting groups since at least World War II. Since the 1940s, groups of women would join to knit and talk in organized Stitch and Bitch clubs. Nowadays, the Stitch 'n Bitch have been analyzed by scholars as expressions of resistance to major political, social and technological change in Western societies. However, political discussion is not unusual at these events, and at least some participants are proponents of progressive, liberal, and/or leftist social and political change.
Who Are We?
FFF is a collective with a goal to provide an inclusive and accessible alternative to charity shops. 80-90% of clothes donated to charity shops are sold to countries in the Global South against their will. Fast fashion companies make it hard to find information on a wide scale. As an example, one market in Ghana receives 15 million garments a week, with 40% going directly to landfill (The Or Foundation).
Join the sustainable fashion movement making swapping accessible beyond friends and family, online apps and events. Did you know 6 out of 10 Britons don't know how to sew on a button (British Heart Foundation) ! We're here to change that. We're coming soon to a high street near you ! Follow our journey on our Instagram, Tiktok or website.
