Looking for a fun and easy project that will help you declutter your stash? Pin cushions are both decorative and useful (or yours could be a miniature pillow), and they are delightful to make. This vintage design is great for using up small quantities of fabric that you’ve kept because they’re pretty or feel special. Almost any fabric that can take a pin through it can be used, including loosely woven textiles if you place a layer of cotton muslin or calico behind it! Stitches and handweavers, have leftover bits you’d like to have find a home? Perfect! And there’s plenty of room for making this project extra special with embroidery and other embellishments if you desire.
These creations are also great as gifts or as an affordable small item to add to your collection of handmade goods for sale. Once you learn how to make them, it’s likely no fabric scrap is safe! You are welcome to work on as many pin cushions as you desire during class.
Materials to gather from your stash:
A bowl, saucer, mug (e.g. round object) between 5 and 7 inches in diameter. This will serve as your circular template.
Fabric scraps large enough to fit your round template object, though piecing smaller fragments together works too.
Needle and thread.
Fabric and thread scissors.
Stuffing: fiber fill, wool roving or batting, etc.
Yarn, embroidery floss, or pearl cotton for outside shape stitching.
Decorative button or bead for center.
Sewing pins or fabric clips (optional, if these are helpful).
