Live scenes from "The American Five" spark dialogue on MLK, Jewish wisdom, race, identity, and justice in a two part class.
About this Event

Due to the inclement weather, the January 27 class has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 17. The second session will be scheduled for March 11.

In 2025, Ford's Theatre commissioned and staged the world premiere of "The American Five", written by Sixth & I'er Chess Jakobs, which was named the #1 show in the region. The play brings to life the relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and four of his closest confidants in the days leading up to the March on Washington, wrestling with questions of race, power, faith, identity, and solidarity, including the often-overlooked stories of a Jewish member (Stanley Levison) and a queer member (Bayard Rustin) of Dr. King's inner circle, as well as Coretta Scott King and Clarence B. Jones.

In this two part class, co-led by Chess Jakobs and Rabbi Jenna, experience live scenes from "The American Five", performed by actors, and place them in conversation with Jewish wisdom, text, and tradition. Come to one class or both.

Session One: February 17 Class

Tikkun olam, the Jewish call to repair the world, takes center stage in this discussion. Where does this imperative actually come from? What does it demand of us in practice? And how can this powerful idea be both meaningful and, at times, misunderstood or misused?

Session Two: March 11 Class

Experience a scene from the play that delves into race, whiteness, and Jewish identity, opening space for honest reflection and nuanced conversation.

No one will be turned away from any of our classes due to lack of funds. For more information, please contact our Jewish Life Associate, Robyn Fishman, [email protected]

Please note: tickets are non-refundable.
