Experience one of Germany's most beloved family traditions in the heart of Austin.
Join the German-Texan Heritage Society for our annual St. Martin's Umzug (Lantern Parade)—an evening filled with glowing lanterns, music, community, and the timeless story of St. Martin.
Children and families will walk together through the historic grounds of the 1857 German Free School, carrying colorful lanterns as we celebrate a tradition that has been passed down for generations throughout Germany.
Whether this is your first Umzug or one you've celebrated since childhood, everyone is welcome.
A Tradition That Continues to Grow
When we organized our first St. Martin's Umzug in 2024, we hoped that perhaps 50 people would attend.
Instead, more than 225 families and friends joined us.
In 2025, attendance grew to over 350 participants, confirming what we quickly learned:
The German community, and many beyond it, loves this tradition.
Now we're excited to continue growing this special evening with even more families in 2026.
