Spring Concert

We will open with Antonin Dvořák’s Scherzo Capriccioso, a whirlwind of exquisite melody and rousing rhythm. To follow, we are thrilled to present once again the beautiful but rarely performed violin concerto by the Armenian composer Arno Babadjanian. The soloist for this performance is Dr. Nuné Melikian, a talented musician and renowned scholar of Armenian classical music and of Babadjanian in particular. Dr. Melikian will present a free lecture on Friday March 27 at 1100 in the UVA Chapel, hosted by the Armenian Society, to which all are welcome.
The concert will conclude with La Boutique Fantasque (The Magic Toyshop) based on a suite for piano written by Gioachino Rossini subsequently orchestrated by Ottorino Respighi and used for a one act ballet by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. The delightful music, at times exuberant, sweetly lyrical, and sometimes comedic, is ultimately full of life like the magic dancing dolls it portrays.
Please join us after the performance in the lobby for refreshments - including Armenian treats - and an opportunity to meet the musicians and learn more about the Armenian society.
The concert is free and no tickets are required, but it helps our planning to know how many people to expect. Please visit our website to rsvp, to join our mailing list, or make a donation if you wish.
The venue (Grisham Hall) is fully accessible per ADA compliance standards, and every seat is a good one! Children are especially welcomed and would surely enjoy this concert!
