Spread Your Wings! Pollinator Appreciation Day
About this Event
Spread Your Wings! Pollinator Appreciation Day
Let's gather to show off our creativity in celebration of the hardest working members of the garden. Pollinators, which often include insects, birds, mammals, or environmental factor like wind or water, transfer pollen from plant to plant, providing a critical step in plant fertilization and reproduction. 64th Street Community Garden, located at 373 64th Street on the border of Sunset Park and Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, NY, depends on its pollinators to help the garden grow and thrive. We invite our neighbors to gather on Saturday, July 11, 2026 from 1PM to 5:30PM for an afternoon highlighting the tireless work, ingenuity and contributions of our garden pollinators. This event is free and open to all ages. The schedule will include:
- 1:00PM Welcome and Opening Remarks
- 1:30PM Storytime: Books About Bugs! Let's read some of our favorite children's books featuring different pollinating bugs and the work they do in the garden.
- 2:00PM Spread Your Wings Parade: Show off your creativity and wear your very own wings (store-bought or handmade, real or imaginary!). Everyone will have a chance to showcase their wings in a parade through the garden.
- 2:30PM Bee-Keeping at 64th Street Community Garden: Founding member and resident bee-keeper, Dan Giacalone, will showcase the apiary at the garden and answer any questions you might have about urban bee-keeping.
- 3:30PM Fairy House Making Workshop: Build your very own fairy house! We ask that attendees bring their own non-polluting art-cycled materials (such as scraps of natural fabrics, and scavenged metal, glass, and wood objects), using additional found materials in the garden to make a unique home for fairies.
- 5:15PM Closing Remarks
64th Street Community Garden is more than just soil and seeds; it is a vibrant Brooklyn hub where bees buzz, kids learn where their food comes from, and neighbors find community. As part of NYC Parks Green Thumb program, the garden is free and open to visitors every Saturday during the gardening season.
