The stage adaptation of Spirited Away follows 10-year-old Chihiro, who accidentally wanders into a magical, abandoned village with her parents. After her mother and father are transformed into pigs by the sorceress Yubaba, Chihiro must work in Yubaba’s mystical spirit bathhouse to find a way to save her family and return to the human world. The award-winning production—directed by John Caird (Les Misérables)—reimagines Hayao Miyazaki’s classic film using intricate Bunraku-style puppetry, elaborate rotating stage sets, and a live orchestra playing the original Joe Hisaishi score. The show features a massive ensemble cast of 50 actors and puppeteers to bring the spirits and magical creatures to life. The narrative is a coming-of-age story where Chihiro transforms from a timid, spoiled child into a brave and compassionate young woman. Along the way, she relies on the help of enigmatic spirit Haku, while navigating a bathhouse filled with unique deities, demons, and the mysterious spirit Kaonashi (No-Face).
