About this Event

In a special edition of our monthly Poetry Book Club, poet and book club leader Doug Knowlton will be in conversation with Jeff Grieneisen, the author of this month's selection, Language of Phosphorescence: Poems.

We will meet in person at our store location at The Mark, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $20, which includes a copy of Language of Phosphoresence to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting.

About the Author

Jeff Grieneisen is president of the Imagist Society (https://imagistsociety.org/), professor of literature and creative writing at State College of Florida, and part-time instructor at Ringling College of Art and Design. He has published creative and critical works in anthologies and journals and two full-length books of poetry: Good Sumacs (MAMMOTH Books) and The Language of Phosphorescence, (Lavender Ink). His scholarship and invited lectures include articles, presentations, and workshops on writers Edgar Allan Poe, Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Ernest Hemingway, and James Wright, and his work focuses on contemporary poetics and global literary modernism through theoretical lenses, especially ecocriticism, and criticism.

About the Book

The poems in this collection examine the role of the individual’s relationship with place and with the evolving concept of “home.” The speaker, often autobiographical, struggles with the geographic and ecological sense of home and the passage of time as relates to the spiritual separation of body and soul.

About the Moderator

Doug has been writing poems and lyrics since the 1960s. His love of poetry was reignited as he participated in readings around the Orlando area from 1996 to 1999. He emceed the open mic at Java N'Jive Coffee House in Palmetto from 2002 to 2003. He was a regular at the Fogartyville Cafe Open Mic (Bradenton) from 2002 to 2005 and hosted the Village Bookshop Poets and Writers from 2006 to 2011. Doug finds it especially fulfilling to encounter readers and listeners who are awakening to poetry's vast potential.
