Special Ethical, Legal, and Practice Issues for 2025

A variety of special ethical, legal, and practice issues exist in 2025. These range from important new Tennessee laws about duty-to-warn, access to records, and working with minors to new service delivery topics such as interstate compacts, online counseling companies, and life coaching. This seminar explores a variety of these timely topics through clinical vignettes.

Interacting with other clinicians is an important component of this seminar. Through small group and whole group discussions of clinical vignettes relating to timely issues, participants will learn from/share with colleagues while sharpening their critical thinking and decision-making skills. The small groups also provide an excellent opportunity to make connections with other counseling professionals.

• Recent changes to duty-to-warn law in Tennessee
• Impact of the TN Family Rights & Responsibilities Act (FRRA)
• New laws regarding consent for minors
• Updated requirements for providing records to clients
• Status of the interstate compacts for counseling and social work
• Online counseling companies: Provider risks & benefits
• Life coaching and clinical practice -- what clinicians need to know

Upon completion of the training participants will be able to . . .

1. Discuss the impact of the TN Family Rights & Responsibilities Act on consent for minors
2. Describe changes in TN laws regarding duty-to-warn and providing records to clients
3. Summarize the status of mental health interstate compacts
4. Evaluate the risks and benefits associated with two non-traditional modes of service delivery

Terry Casey, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, HSP (TN #1975) conducts webinars/seminars on a variety of topics relating to ethical, legal, and practice issues. For the past 18 years, he has taught Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in Lipscomb University's CACREP-accredited M.S. program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. For 17 years he served as the Clinical Director for a large counseling and psychological services organization based in Nashville. He also served for several years as the Chair of the Ethics Committee Chair for a state-level professional organization. Dr. Casey operates a private practice in Franklin, Tennessee through which he provides consultation services to private practices and counseling/mental health-related organizations.

This in-person seminar provides 3.0 CE hours (3.0 NBCC hours) through Lipscomb University’s CAREP-accredited M.S. program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Continuing education requirements of the various licensing boards can change without notice. Always check your licensing rules/board to be sure about the current CE requirements for your license type and state.

The Lipscomb University, Department of Psychology, Counseling, and Family Science has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 4585. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Plan to arrive early on campus. Classes will be in session and parking after 8:00 a.m. may be more challenging especially if other campus events are going on. The seminar will be held in Ezell Center 301 (#2 on the map below). The closest parking is the lot [P] immediately in front of the Shinn Center (#1). Parking lots P2 & P1 are also nearby.
