Spanish Film Club x IberoDocs: The First Women
About this Event
The First Women (As primeiras)
Adriana Yañez / Brazil / 2024 / 78 min
Portuguese with English subtitles
The First Women uncovers the untold stories of the pioneering women who formed Brazil’s first national women’s soccer team. Although women were legally barred from playing soccer until 1979, these trailblazers broke barriers and represented Brazil internationally throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Yet, despite their achievements, they received little public recognition or reward.
Today, these former athletes are in their 60s and live in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. To support themselves, they work as street vendors, Uber drivers, construction workers, and soccer coaches in community programs. Nevertheless, their passion for the game endures. They gather to play soccer, coach young players, and watch Brazil’s matches on television, sharing moments of camaraderie and resilience.
This screening is part of the Spanish Film Club Series, a collaboration between IberoDocs and Edinburgh Council that was made possible with the support of Pragda, SPAIN arts & culture, and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain.
