Space Camp Saturday: Exploring Exoplanets

Discover the weird and wonderful worlds beyond our solar system!
About this Event

Join us for our final Space Camp Saturday of 2026!

This month, discover exoplanets – planets beyond our solar system. Learn how scientists find these distant worlds, determine what they're made of, and explore some of the weirdest and most fascinating planets out there!

Led by a guest speaker, Breanna Wegewitz, from the UBC Department of Physics and Astronomy, this afternoon features an interactive presentation and hands-on activities for the whole family (recommended ages 10+).

Topic: Hunting Alien Worlds: The Science of Exoplanet Detection

How do astronomers detect distant planets orbiting stars? How do they figure out what these worlds are like? We'll be investigating some of the different methods to detecting exoplanets and their conditions. As well as looking at the different instruments used and what an astronomer sees using these.

Feature Speaker - Breanna Wegewitz: I'm a current Astronomy student in my last year of my Undergrad. I have been a lover of space since I was a little girl in thanks due to a dark sky growing up with my passion for it never leaving. Currently I am working on a directed study mapping star forming regions of nuclear rings (galaxy's inner most ring) using data from the Very Large Telescope.
