Soprano Sophie Horrocks accompanied by David Murray

Following our successful winter programme of classic music, we are delighted to welcome for the first time to the Old Low Light Heritage Centre, mezzo soprano Sophie Horrocks, accompanied by David Murray who is well known to us.

Sophie and David’s hour-long repertoire will be varied including French songs, operatic arias and musical theatre favourites by some of the world’s greatest composers dating from the 18th century to date.

The French songs are by 19th century composers Cécile Chaminade, Gabriel Fauré and Hector Berlioz.

The operatic arias are by composers from the 18th to the 20th century including George Frideric Handel, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Johann Strauss II, Benjamin Britten and Mark Adams.

The musical favourites are by Cole Porter and Stephen Sondheim, important figures in 19th and 20th century musical theatre.

Sophie Horrocks is a French-British mezzo soprano from Edinburgh who currently performs small ensembles in Scotland, England and France, while also maintaining a career as an education practitioner collaborating in academic research and outreach projects.

She studied music at the University of Cambridge, followed by a Master’s at King’s College, London and more recently, a PhD in musicology at Durham University.

David Murray, from Whitley Bay, and his wife Jennifer, have been involved with the Old Low Light Heritage Centre for the past few years. They are renowned, professional musicians and teachers who are passionate about providing opportunities for local people to hear top class classic music in their local community.

David Murray is recognised as one of the North East’s most acclaimed pianists, and is in constant demand as a soloist, accompanist and chamber music partner. He has accompanied top musiciansin recitals all over the world.

He is also well known as a choral trainer and conductor and is permanent conductor of Bishopwearmouth Choral Society and Hexham Abbey Festival Chorus.

Old Low Light centre director, Guy Moody, said: “After such a well-received winter programme of classic music, we are pleased to be able to offer this summer concert. Once again, we are grateful to David and Jennifer Murray for bringing such first class musicians to the centre.”
