Sonic Soul comes to The Venue on October 3 for a special night of electrifying blues, rock, soul, and improvisation led by Chicago guitarist, singer, and songwriter John Bruhnke.

This is not a traditional blues show. SonicSoul takes great songs as a launching point, combining the emotional power of the blues with the freedom of jazz and the energy of rock. Music by Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Santana, Cream, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and others is transformed through adventurous arrangements, deep grooves, and spontaneous interplay among four exceptional musicians.

No two Sonic Soul performances are ever quite the same. Familiar songs stretch into new territory, solos become conversations, and the music has a life of its own. The evening will also feature many Sonic Soul originals that crowds often enjoy as much as, or even more than, the classics they cover.

They’ll have you singing along, dancing, or simply sitting back and taking in the music. John’s goal is to take everyone on a musical ride, and the audience is just as much a part of that experience as the musicians on the stage.

At the center of SonicSoul is guitarist, singer, and songwriter John Bruhnke. John came up in the vibrant Chicago blues scene of the 1990s and has shared the stage with legendary artists including Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, Buddy Miles, Robert Cray, Lonnie Brooks, Junior Wells, and Koko Taylor.

This past June, John joined his mentor, Robben Ford, for a special performance at The Iridium in New York City honoring the legacy of Les Paul. Celebrated for his work with Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, and his acclaimed solo career, Ford helped bring a new level of jazz harmony and sophistication to modern blues guitar, an approach that has deeply influenced John’s own musical direction.

Ford described John this way:

“John Bruhnke has assimilated everything I’ve thrown at him and still has his own thing!”

The October 3 set will include two of John’s favorite Robben Ford songs, “Freedom” and “How Deep in the Blues.”

For this performance, John has assembled a remarkable lineup whose collective experience spans Chicago blues, jazz, soul, rock, and stages around the world.

A Special Lineup Rooted in Chicago Blues

Daryl Coutts, Piano and Hammond Organ

Daryl Coutts and John first met in the Chicago blues scene of the 1990s, but it was not until the late 2010s that they began working together regularly and discovered a particularly strong musical connection.

Daryl is one of Chicago’s most in-demand musicians and the longtime keyboardist for Ronnie Baker Brooks. His extensive recording career includes releases on Chicago’s legendary Alligator Records, where he has recorded with artists including Eddy Clearwater and Lonnie Brooks, alongside many of the musicians who helped define modern Chicago blues.

Daryl has also released music under his own name, including his album Just in Time, and leads The Organ Crushers. With Daryl’s busy touring and performing schedule, opportunities for John and Daryl to play together have become harder to come by. For October 3, things aligned.

Brady Williams — Drums

John began playing regularly with Brady Williams in 2018, and Brady’s swing, feel, and unmistakable groove have become the heart of SonicSoul.

It all starts with the drummer, and Brady brings a lifetime of experience in jazz, blues, rock, and reggae to every performance. He creates the launch pad for the rest of the band to take chances, stretch out, and find inspiration in the moment.

A revered Chicago musician, Brady has performed and recorded with blues icons including Koko Taylor, Eddy Clearwater, Carlos Johnson, Sugar Blue, and Junior Wells. His deep pocket, musical instincts, and ability to move effortlessly between styles are a big part of what gives Sonic Soul its sound.

Vernay Reindollar — Bass

Originally from southeast Indiana, Vernay studied at Indiana University, DePauw University, and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. His career has taken him through the music scenes of Chicago and Nashville, and he now resides in Florida, where he is in demand for jazz, blues, classical, and pop performances.

Vernay and John have remained close through the years, and their musical chemistry was forged during their time together in the vibrant Chicago blues scene of the 1990s. Vernay was alongside John for memorable performances with artists including Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, Junior Wells, and Lonnie Brooks. His return from Florida for this special show brings that shared history and chemistry back to the stage.

Sonic Soul interprets the songs they love. The band brings together their own songs, remarkable musicianship, and the passion to create music in the moment, on the edge, where all possibilities exist.
