Te Ara Whānui ki te Rangi Space Place presents Solar Tsunamis: Parawhenua Kōmaru, an exhibition developed by Tūhura Otago Museum. This exhibition showcases how Aotearoa has become the only country with a plan to protect its electrical grid from a massive space weather event – what NASA calls a Solar Tsunami.
Through hands-on activities, discover how Faraday’s law of induction powers our homes and how the same forces can threaten electrical grids across the globe. Test the resistivity of rocks, simulate an aurora, and watch electricity come alive in a giant plasma ball.
See Waihiko me te Parawhenua Kōmaru | Waihiko and the Solar Tsunami – a short planetarium show about the power of the sun and how solar storms can affect electricity on earth.
Solar Tsunamis: Parawhenua Kōmaru is a family-friendly exhibition that brings the wonders of space weather to life.
Saturday 2 November – Monday 9 December
Open daily | Space Place
