Ready to learn quilting basics and want to get tips and tricks from an experienced quilter? This class is for you! We'll start where a quilt begins: piecing basic quilt blocks (4-patch, flying geese, half square triangle, log cabin) that together will create your quilt top. You will also learn how these basic blocks translate to more complicated blocks. While making the blocks into a finished 3-layer quilt will be foreshadowed, it won't be taught in depth in this "first-step" class. The last hour of the class will be a supervised workshop time, allowing you to practice your new skills and ask questions. You will receive a booklet to take home with all of the topics covered in class.
Foundational skills taught:
Accurate cutting
Importance of the 1/4" seam allowance
Pressing
Matching seams and points
Looking at a block to find the forms
Importance of fabric grain
Shortcuts and tips to jumpstart the process

Your instructor, Sarah, is an award-winning, fourth generation quilter with many years experience.
Prerequisites: Bring your own sewing machine. You will need to know how to use your machine, i.e. threading, winding a bobbin, locating basic functions, and sewing a 1/4" seam. Ability to use cutting and ironing tools safely.
Materials list: Sewing machine, 4-8 different fabrics, a fat quarter or quarter yard each and cotton thread (for light fabrics, white or grey, for dark fabrics, black, dark grey or matching). Recommended but not necessary: Quilting ruler and rotary cutter.
Available for use in the classroom, but you may bring your own: Marking tools (pencil, tailor's chalk, disappearing ink), scissors, pins, seam ripper, self healing cutting mat, rotary cutter, clear ruler, iron and ironing board.
