Learn how to safely use 60W and 130W CNC lasers at Clear Creek Makerspace and take home two 4x4" custom coasters that you built in this hands-on workshop! The tops of the coasters will have a marquetry design of your choosing and the cork backs will be engraved with your custom text. I will guide you on how to use LightBurn to vectorize images and set up layers as well as safe and proper use of the CNC laser machines.
Materials and supplies will be provided for you, including a selection of hardwood veneers, plywood substrate, cork, and finishing supplies. I will provide a selection of marquetry designs you can choose from. The custom engraving can be any text of your choice.
This 2-hour course will cover topics such as:
- Where to buy, how to select, how to perpare hardwood veneers
- LightBurn: navigation, layers, modes, power, speed, and framing
- How to vectorize images in LightBurn for cutting
- Designing custom text in LightBurn for engraving
- Safe and proper usage of the 60W and 130W OMTech CNC lasers
- Marquetry assembly and panel glue-ups techniques
- Sanding and finishing for a polished look
You will walk away with two ready to use coasters that you built!
You'll also have the knowledge and experience to pass the LAS101 quiz which will allow members to reserve the CNC lasers for personal use.
