In this foreshadowing of spring during the depths of winter we feature a colorful bouquet of soloists. American composer Vittorio Giannini's energetic, neoclassical Concerto Grosso features the strings to open the program Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 closes the first half featuring trumpet, flute, oboe, and violin soloists from the orchestra. The Brandenburg Concertos are regarded as some of the finest examples of composition of the Baroque era and the trumpet solo in No. 2 is still considered one of the most difficult in the repertoire. We will feature two budding young artists from the Stars of Summer International Piano Competition held in Cleveland this past summer. The concert concludes with Aaron Copland's suite from the ballet Appalachian Spring in its original 13-instrument version.
Greg Hillis, conductor
