SMCH Resource Nurse (RSN) Class

• IMPORTANT: Unit leadership approval is required to participate.

• Minimum of 4 students to confirm a class. If this is not met, the class will be cancelled and the students will be offered the option to transfer to another class.

This course is designed to train new resource nurses or charge nurses in the charge nurse role and involved operating a unit, mitigation of difficult situations, de-escalation, fiscal responsibility, the RSN as a leadership role. It is designed to ensure that new RSN's get the right training before embarking on this role.

Upon completion of the class, the participant will be able to:

• Differentiate between general nursing duties and leadership responsibilities by listing three distinct characteristics of effective leadership in a clinical setting.
• Identify early warning signs of potential workplace violence and demonstrate the correct steps for utilizing de-escalation techniques to maintain a safe environment.
• Utilize patient acuity data and institutional staffing tools to make evidence-based, fiscally sound decisions regarding staffing levels.
• Utilize the Wheel of Mindfulness tool to identify personal barriers to communication and manage the discomfort associated with giving difficult
  feedback.
• Demonstrate the SBIA (Situation, Behavior, Impact, Action) model to deliver clear, actionable, and professional feedback to colleagues.

This continuing education (CE) course is offered through Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford by the Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry (CPEI). Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), Provider Number 9713.

• While CA BRN credits are accepted for your RN license renewal, ANCC credits may only apply to specific certifications. To ensure your credits are valid, please verify with your state board or accrediting body whether they accept ANCC-approved continuing education.

• Contact your professional board to determine if they accept continuing education (CE) credits approved by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Earning CE Credits

• To be eligible for Continuing Education (CE) credits, participants are required to attend the entire course or event and complete the course evaluation. Partial credit cannot be granted for late arrivals or early departures.

Certificate Issuance and Record Keeping

• CE certificates will be distributed within 30 days of course completion. Participants are responsible for maintaining their personal records of accrued CE documentation. Certificates must be retained for four years following the course date and are valid for a single use toward registered nurse license renewal.

• This FREE training is exclusively offered to Stanford Medicine Children's Health employees.

• The Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry (CPE&I) accepts card payments ONLY for course fees and materials. Transfer of Funds are no longer accepted. Employees seeking reimbursement for educational expenses must obtain their manager's approval through Bright Horizon. • Cancellation by CPEI: Schedules, venues and details are subject to change and cancellation. Registered participants will be provided with as much advance notice as possible if this should occur. If CPEI cancels class, full refund will be given.
