Learning how to sew your own slow fashion clothes with Kirsty M´ate
About this Event

The Slow Fashion Sewing Series – for Adult Beginners

Do you struggle to find clothes that truly fit your body, last the way you’d like, or come in the fabrics you love?

At The ReDress Hub, we’re here to help you take a step toward circular fashion—keeping clothes in use for longer, reducing reliance on fast fashion, and cutting down on textile waste.

When clothes fit well, are made to last, and feel great to wear, they become treasured items you’ll keep for years—not just weeks. That’s why we’ve created this four-part workshop series, designed especially for adult beginners, to give you the skills to start making your own handmade, slow-fashion garments.

Guided by the passionate Kirsty Máté, you’ll learn everything from choosing fabrics and reading patterns to constructing and finishing a garment you’ll be proud to wear by the end of the course.

What you’ll learn over 4 weeks:

  • Week 1: Patterns & Fabric – How to read dressmaking patterns, choose fabrics, lay out, pin, mark, and cut.
  • Week 2: Construction Fundamentals – Seams, stay stitching, facings, and/or under-stitching.
  • Week 3: Garment Construction – Inserting sleeves and/or adding pockets.
  • Week 4: Finishing Touches – Hemming and/or creating casings.

Bring your curiosity and creativity!

***

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is suitable for all beginners, 18 years and over, who know how to use a sewing machine. (If you are younger than 18 our Slow Fashion Series for young beginners is offered regularly)

We recommend completing our free workshop if you haven't used a machine before, and practice using the machine before attending this course.

***

What am I going to make?

We have selected patterns suitable for beginners for you to start learning the skills of sewing your own garments.

You can choose between making a stylish pair of elsatic waisted pants or skirt, a sweet summery dress, or top (scroll down to see pictures).

***

How do I book?

Choose the first date of the Series and book selecting the Series Workshop ticket.

Please note: We will also be asking you for the pattern you wish to make and your body measurements when booking so we can let you know how much fabric to purchase.

Installment payments

We also offer you the flexibility of a payment instalment package so you don't have to pay the full amount up front. If this suits you, please reserve your place by selecting the Instalment Plan Reserve Ticket and to make future instalment payments, select the appropriate payments in the Add-ons section.

Full payment must be made before the start of the series.

Companion ticket

If you require a carer or support while attending your workshop, we have a special Companion Ticket for those with a Companion card. Please enter the code ReDressCompanion (all one word) to reveal this special ticket when booking your tickets.

ReGift Program

Through a Community Grant with the City of Launceston, we are pleased to be able to offer subsidised spaces to this workshop series for people on full-time pensions, unemployment benefits, hold a health care card or similar.

Interested? Please contact us directly (see below) and we'll explain how you can also be a part of this program.

What do I bring?

We’ll supply all materials, patterns, and equipment (including sewing machines)—you just need to bring:

  • Fabric (we’ll email details once we have your measurements)
  • Matching thread – choose good quality (e.g. Guttermann)

Optional but helpful:

  • Dressmaker’s scissors (to finish cutting at home after Week 1)
  • Dressmaking pins

An upcycled notebook will be provided for note-taking.

Fabric Guidelines
  • We recommend starting with inexpensive, upcycled, or remnant fabric (doona covers work brilliantly for woven fabrics!).
  • The ReDress Hub has a wide range of affordable remnant fabrics ($3.50–$8/m), with an extra 50% discount for participants.

Sewing Machine Use

You’ll need basic sewing machine skills. If you’re new, attend one of our free workshops before starting.

We provide machines, but you’re welcome to bring your own—just let us know in advance.
