At Smith’s we love songs, and the songwriters that sing them. We host plenty of bands and we love them too, but every so often we’d like to strip the accompaniment away and hear the songs as they were written – one voice, one instrument, unadorned and vulnerable. For this tenth edition of Six of the Best, we have once again asked four very different song-writers to share six of their best songs with us. In order of appearance, we have…
Ally Cowell – Musician, world traveller, coffee fanatic, food lover, beer and wine appreciator, animal company finder, Canberra lover.
Randall Blair has been playing guitar, writing songs, making music, stuffing around and embarrassing his family since he was 14. Now in his 50s, he knows he should just stop, but music is still an act of defiance in his naive & simple mind.
Lily Morris is a singer-songwriter based on Walbanga country (Braidwood, NSW) penning songs about her beloved hometown, the ins-and-outs of daily life, and the thoughts that hitch through her head at night.
Gary Luck has been writing songs since he was fourteen. He has toured with Ross Ryan (I Am Pegasus) and more recently with Keith Potger of The Seekers. His main influences are Gordon Lightfoot, Jimmy Buffet, Ross Ryan, The Seekers, Redgum, John Prine, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce and Ralph McTell. You can expect some of those influences to come through in some of the original songs he sings. He is currently finalising his first all originals album to be released later this year.
