Singapore History Walking Tour

Congrats—you’re on the invite list for the Tiger Tracks Singapore history walk (aka “Scott’s retirement project”). I’m not retired, but to keep my Singapore Tourism Board guide license active I do need to run the occasional tour—and honestly, I love history and storytelling, so I choose to do this outside my day job.

A friend once told me, “Scott, nobody cares about Singapore history. People want tours in Paris, Rome, or DC—not Singapore!” You (and this city) prove him wrong. Singapore packs centuries into a few walkable blocks. For example:

• At the river’s edge we’ll trace six centuries of settlement, trade, power shifts, occupation, and politics.
• Steps away we’ll stand where the East India Company—arguably the most powerful corporation of its age—projected influence across a vast maritime empire.
• We’ll see the cultural mélange shaped by ambitious immigrants, indentured laborers, stoic sepoys, and the descendants of rich, ancient kingdoms.
• From a small hill in Chinatown we’ll look across waves of development and architecture lapping onto reclaimed shores.

Along the way we’ll unpack colonial administration, the secrets of shophouses, and the religious—and very practical—roles of temples and clan associations.

Still not interested? The tour ends at Lau Pa Sat, which serves hot satay and cold beer.

This is a friends-and-family tour, not a business (yet). I’m doing it for fun. Any proceeds will be donated to a local dog-rescue charity; donate whatever you like—I’ll share details at the start.

The tour begins at 9am. The meeting point is in front of the Asian Civilizations Museum. Walk to the river's edge and meet at the bronze sculpture called A Great Emporium.
