Perhaps you were there at AB in 2023 when this 9-piece folk collective paid tribute to Harry Smith's iconic collector ‘Anthology Of American Folk Music’. Or maybe you were overwhelmed in 2024 at their passage at Rijkeklarenkerk as part of our BRDCST festival. Or maybe you are a fan of Lankum, ØXN, merope, Trá Pháidín (to be discovered in AB on ZA 7 JUNE 2025!), John Francis Flynn, Indre Jurgeleviciute or Brìghde Chaimbeul and cherish the latest, highly idiosyncratic wave of folk and Shovel Dance Collective is now suddenly on your ‘to be discovered’ list with a bullet.
Anyway, after their debut ‘The Water Is the Shovel of the Shore’ - described by Gonzo Circus as ‘one of the quirkiest as well as most exciting folk records of 2022’ - their eponymous second album is already another hit. KLOF Mag: ‘Shovel Dance Collective once again demonstrates through their new album how they are changing the way folk music is created, and they are doing so with breathtakingly potent tunes.’ Mojo lauded the album with a **** review and at The Quietus the album landed in their ‘Albums Of The Year 2024’.
